Several hundred people protested Thursday night in New York’s Times Square, calling for the protection of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into potential collusion between Russia and President Donald Trump’s campaign, The Associated Press reported.
Slogans included “Hands off Mueller” and “Nobody’s above the law.” Signs included “Truth must triumph” and “Repeal, replace Trump.”
Organizers claimed similar events were held in hundreds of places across the country. They said the firing of Jeff Sessions as attorney general and the installation of acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker undercuts “the independence of the investigation.”
They said the move is a “deliberate attempt to obstruct the special counsel’s investigation,” the AP reported.
Whitaker has criticized Mueller’s probe, the AP said. Congressional Democrats have called on him to recuse himself from overseeing the investigation.
